...this month's featured artist is: Munch

Edvard Munch is considered as one of the major symbolist painters, forerunner of the expressionist movement. "I don't paint what i see, but what i've seen" he said, to underline his distance from the (post)impressionism. Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish painter belonging to the Baroque movement. In accordance with this style, he proposed a painting rich of emotions, with emphasized movements, vivid colors and unusual sensuality. He is well-known for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects.

He had many students and apprentices who helped him (some of his works have been painted by Rubens himself only in part - mostly hands and faces) like Anthony Van Dick, who later became famous on his own.

Rubens pictures are nowadays well worth in the market: at a Sotheby's auction on July 10, 2002, Rubens' newly discovered painting Massacre of the Innocents sold for £49.5million ($76.2 million) to Lord Thomson. It is a current record for an Old Master painting.

A few words about the music

Bach's "Matthaus Passion" (originally "Passio Domini Nostri J.C. Secundum Evangelistam Matthaeum", that translates to "The Suffering of our Lord J.C. after the Evangelist Matthew") was written in 1727 for solo voices, double choir and double orchestra.

The movement contained in the video is the last one, the 68th, called Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder (We sit down in tears).
